Planned Itinerary

Friday, 1 September: Travel to Lone Pine, about a seven hour drive from the Sacramento area. Visit the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitors Center in Lone Pine to pick up permits and rent Bear Canisters. Drive to the portal. Camp at the Whitney Portal campground site #44, elevation about 8,300 feet, to begin acclimating. See Mapquest directions for the suggested route to Lone Pine. See Lone Pine text map for the location of the Visitors Center and Portal Road.

Saturday, 2 September: Acclimate to the altitude with a short day hike to Lone Pine Lake, the Meysan Lakes trail, or at Horseshoe Meadows. Camp again at the portal.

Sunday, 3 September: Backpack to Trail Camp, elevation about 12,000 feet, distance from the portal, about 6 miles.

Monday, 4 September: Hike to the summit, elevation 14,496 feet. Return to Trail Camp, pack up. Return to the portal campsite. 

Tuesday, 5 September: Drive home.
