Bear canisters are plastic cylinders about 8" in
diameter and 12" long, with a capacity of about
588 cubic inches. They weigh about 3 pounds if I
remember correctly, take up a lot of room in a backpack,
and are required for overnight trips on the main trail -
but not for day hikes. The Whitney
Portal Store and the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitors Center
both rent bear canisters. Below is the Bear Canister
pamphlet from 2002. I didn't receive one this year. Apparently
these are no longer distributed with the permit
confirmation letter.
